Getting a Library Card

Tempe Public Library cards are available free of charge for the following users:

  • All Maricopa County residents
  • Anyone employed within the city of Tempe
  • Anyone attending school within the city of Tempe
  • Owners of Tempe businesses who reside outside Maricopa County

To obtain a card, you will need to bring photo identification and proof of address.

Please note:

  • All applicants under age 16 require a parent or guardian present to obtain a card.
  • Borrowing privileges are available to non-residents of Maricopa County for an annual fee of $40.
  • All cards are renewed annually with identification and proof of address.

Current print or electronic paystub, which includes:
  • Applicants name
  • Employer address within the city of Tempe
Current paper or electronic school records, including:
  • Enrollment Verification form
  • Course Registration
  • Report Card or Transcript

Replacing a lost or stolen library card

Library users who have lost their Tempe Public Library card may apply for a replacement card by showing valid identification. Lost cards must be reported to the Library immediately. If a card which was reported lost is found, it should be destroyed or returned to the library for disposal.

Please note: Starting May 15, 2017 - You will receive one free replacement card per calendar year, and will incur a $2.00 replacement card fee thereafter.

Library Card Designs and Artists

Tempe Public Library currently features six library card designs which were commissioned by Tempe Public Art. Six local artists provided six different card designs and painted a utility box to match within the Mill Avenue District. These boxes are located on Mill Avenue between Rio Salado and 7th Street.  Read more.
